Described as the denim of South Africa, shweshwe is a cotton-based fabric that is characterized by bright colors and intricate geometric patterns. This material originates from Europe and was brought to South Africa initially as a gift for Lesotho's King Moshoeshoe I in the 1800's. The king's name could also be spelt “Moshweshwe” which is how the fabric coined its name! Over the years since then, shweshwe has become intrinsic to South Africa. Its vibrant colors and diverse patterns are a representation of South Africas rich culture. Its evolution has resulted in it becoming more than just a fabric but also an expression of oneself.
